Holding Babies 101

You know, most people never really think about how to hold a newborn baby until someone hands you one and you awkwardly attempt to figure out hand placement before anyone notices the expression on your face!

If you are presented with a newborn, make sure to hold him or her with the fleshy parts of your hands (not your fingertips!) and keep one hand at the back of the baby’s neck to keep the weight of the head from straining the neck.

It’s easiest to do this by putting your thumb on one side and the rest of the fingers cradling head and the other side of the neck. Use the other hand and forearm under the baby’s back and bum.
